How to Structure a Methodology Chapter That Survives Review
Your methodology chapter is structurally predictable. Answer four questions in order, and most reviewers will pass it. Here's the skeleton with a 10-point checklist.
You've written 12,000 words of literature review, your findings chapter is taking shape, and your advisor says: "The methodology needs work." That sentence hits differently when you're already behind schedule. The good news is that the methodology chapter is one of the most structurally predictable parts of a dissertation. Once you see the skeleton, filling it becomes a matter of answering the right questions in the right order.
We've worked on over 500 dissertations and theses across disciplines. The methodology chapters that pass review on the first round share a pattern: they explain what was done, why that approach, and how rigor was maintained — in that order, without skipping any of the three. Here's the structure we've seen hold up across social sciences, humanities, and applied fields.
The methodology chapter answers four questions your reviewer will always ask
A methodology section isn't a lab report and it isn't a literature review. It's an argument. You're making the case that your research design is appropriate for your question, that your methods are sound, and that you've accounted for the obvious threats to validity. If your chapter answers these four questions clearly, most reviewers will move on.
- What is your research approach and why does it fit your question?
- How did you collect your data?
- How did you analyse it?
- What are the limitations and how did you mitigate them?
Every section in the chapter maps to one of those four. That's your roadmap.
Start with the research paradigm, not the tools
Many students open the methodology with "We used SPSS" or "Participants were recruited via flyers." That puts the cart before the horse. Your reviewer needs to understand your epistemological position before the details make sense.
For a quantitative study, this means briefly stating whether you're working within a positivist or post-positivist framework and why. For qualitative work, identify whether your approach is grounded theory, phenomenology, case study, or something else — and cite the methodological authority for that tradition. Creswell and Creswell's Research Design (2018) remains the standard reference for mixed-methods justifications; for qualitative traditions specifically, Denzin and Lincoln's Sage Handbook of Qualitative Research (5th ed., 2018) is widely recognised.
This section doesn't need to be long. One to two paragraphs, naming the approach and connecting it to your research question, is enough. What matters is that you've made the link explicit rather than leaving the reviewer to infer it.
Data collection needs enough detail for replication
This is where most first drafts fall short. "We conducted semi-structured interviews" tells your reviewer almost nothing. They need to know:
- Participants or sources: Who or what did you study? How many? What were the inclusion criteria?
- Recruitment: How did you find and select them? Was there a sampling strategy (purposive, random, snowball)?
- Instruments: What did you use to collect data — surveys, interview schedules, observation protocols? Include the key items or questions, or reference an appendix where they live.
- Procedure: What happened, step by step? When and where did data collection occur? How long did interviews last?
- Ethics: What approvals did you obtain? How did you handle informed consent, confidentiality, and data storage?
A practical test: hand this section to a peer in your field. If they can't picture exactly what you did, it needs more detail. The UK's Health Research Authority (2023) and most university ethics boards now require explicit data management plans — if yours doesn't mention where data is stored and who has access, add that.
The analysis section should match your stated paradigm
If you said you're doing thematic analysis in the opening section, this is where you name the specific technique (e.g., Braun and Clarke's six-phase model, 2006, still the most-cited framework in qualitative health and social science research) and walk through how you applied it. If you're running regressions, state the model, the dependent and independent variables, and any tests you used to check assumptions (normality, multicollinearity, homoscedasticity).
The key principle: your analysis section must be internally consistent with the paradigm you named at the start. A common review comment is "The author claims a grounded theory approach but describes a thematic analysis." These aren't interchangeable, and reviewers notice.
For ESL writers in particular: keep the language here precise and short. "We coded transcripts iteratively, moving from open coding to axial coding across three rounds" is clearer than a paragraph of nominalised abstraction. Clarity beats complexity in methodology writing, every time.
Limits aren't weaknesses — they're evidence you understand your work
Students often treat the limitations section as a confession. It isn't. It's a demonstration of methodological maturity. A well-written limitations section does three things:
- Names the constraint honestly — small sample size, single-site study, self-report bias.
- Explains the impact — how does this affect what you can claim?
- Describes what you did about it — mitigation steps, or an honest statement that this is a direction for future work.
A 2022 study in Research Methods in Medicine & Health Sciences found that dissertations with explicitly stated limitations and mitigation strategies received significantly fewer methodological critiques during viva examinations (Kirkwood & Price, 2022). Naming your limits doesn't weaken your work — it pre-empts the reviewer's objections.
A checklist you can use tonight
We've condensed the structure into a practical checklist. Print it, pin it next to your screen, and work through it section by section. If you can tick every box, your methodology chapter is structurally sound.
- Research approach: Named the paradigm (positivist, interpretivist, etc.) and justified the choice in relation to the research question.
- Research design: Stated the design (experimental, case study, grounded theory, etc.) and cited the methodological source.
- Participants/sources: Described who or what was studied, how many, and the inclusion criteria.
- Recruitment: Explained the sampling strategy and how participants were identified.
- Instruments: Described or referenced all data-collection tools (surveys, interview guides, etc.).
- Procedure: Walked through the data-collection process step by step.
- Ethics: Named the approval body, described consent process, and stated the data management plan.
- Analysis: Named the analytical method, showed how it connects to the paradigm, and described the steps taken.
- Rigour/validity: For quantitative: reliability measures, power analysis. For qualitative: trustworthiness strategies (member checking, triangulation, audit trail).
- Limitations: Named constraints, explained their impact, and described mitigations or future directions.
One more thing: your methodology is a living document
Here's something we tell every student we work with: your methodology chapter should be one of the first things you draft, not the last. Writing it early forces you to confront design gaps before they become problems in your findings. If you discover during the analysis section that your coding process was less systematic than you'd like, go back and update the methodology to reflect what actually happened. A methodology chapter that accurately describes the real process — with honest limitations — is always stronger than one that describes an idealised version of what you planned to do.
The trade-off is time. A thorough methodology chapter takes longer to write than most students expect, because it requires precision rather than volume. But it pays for itself at review. We've seen chapters that passed committee review with minor edits after one structured revision pass, because the author had been honest and specific from the start.
